tart going to the gym, give up smoking, learn Spanish… We all come up with the same resolutions every year, but by 2 January, we have already forgotten half of them. Why don’t you make a resolution about something you really want? We make it easy for you, by giving you the best travel plans for the New Year.

Resolution 1: Go to a concert at the new Elbphilharmonie

After 13 years in construction, 11 January is the date for the grand opening of the Elbphilharmonie, the new architectural gem of Hamburg. The building, designed by Herzog & De Meuron, will open its doors with a concert by the prestigious NDR Symphony Orchestra. No tickets are being sold for this event, they were prizes in a free draw. But, following the opening, the program promises to give us plenty to talk about.

Resolution 2: Visit the new Ferrari Land, PortAventura

This new theme park, occupying 60,000 square metres, is dedicated to the home of the Cavallino Rampante. Located in Tarragona, Spain, it will be the first of its type in Europe and boast the highest roller coaster on the continent, a vertical accelerator, 112m tall. The ride aims to reproduce the adrenaline rush that Formula 1 drivers experience when they accelerate to 180 kmh in just five seconds. The opening date is 7 April 2017.

Resolution 3: A road trip on the Great Trail, Canada

Exploring 24,000km of cycle paths and hiking trails is the best way to celebrate the international year of sustainable tourism. This path extends across Canada, from coast to coast, and you can follow it on foot, by bike and even in a boat on some parts. It is still to be completed, but the plan is to finish it this year, 2017, to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Canada Confederation.

Resolution 4: Sleep in a museum

We don’t mean the children’s pyjama parties that some major museums now offer. Rather, we suggest you stay at a five-star hotel. In March 2017, The Silo will open inside the new Museum of Contemporary Art, Cape Town, South Africa. Resolution 6: Eat at Gaggan, the best restaurant in Asia

An Indian restaurant in the capital of Thailand has won the prize for best Asian restaurant, topping the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, for the second year running. Behind its progressive Indian cuisine is chef Gaggan Anand. Born in Calcutta, he trained for a year at El Bulli, run by Ferran Adrià. His tasting menu, which builds on ingredients like chilli miso, Iberian pork and foie gras, ensures his cuisine remains groundbreaking.

Resolution 7: Journey to outer space

This year, the CST-100 spacecraft that Boeing has been developing for NASA is expected to become operational. The company Space Adventures has the rights to sell seats to private buyers. So, if you want to be an astronaut for a day (and can afford the astronomical price), sign up for one of their excursions to the International Space Station. Another more affordable resolution is to buy a piggy bank and start saving, so you can do it in the future.
