The best sunset in New York

If you want to snap a photo of Manhattanhenge, the best sunset in New York, you have to be in the right place at the right time. That place is from 14th Street to Upper Manhattan. And the time is in late May and then again in early July. In other words: three weeks before and three weeks after the summer solstice. Twice a year, the sun is aligned with the main street grid of Manhattan, radiating light across the city for ten minutes to the delight of tourists, passers by and shutterbugs.

In 2017, Manhattanhenge takes place on the 28th May and the 9th July. Those are the two “full sun on the grid” days, but the preview (known as “half sun on the grid”) is also well worth seeing. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, from the American Museum of Natural History, coined the term for the best sunset in New York in 2002. It is a reference to another of the most legendary places to watch the sun set during the summer solstice: Stonehenge (England).
